Gio Savarese to coach minor league Cosmos in second-division North American Soccer League

Former MetroStars forward Gio Savarese has been hired as coach of the reconstituted New York Cosmos, who start play next year in the second division North American Soccer League.

Savarese played for the MetroStars in Major League Soccer from 1996-98 and later had short stints with Swansea and Millwall in England.

He was head of youth development for the MetroStars/New York Red Bulls from 2005-07.

The Cosmos will play in Hempstead on Long Island, their home from 1972-73 in the old NASL.
