Coral Springs, FL – Gene Jones fired a 6-under 66 on Wednesday and moved into a share of the lead with Bobby Clampett after two rounds the Champions Tour Q-School.
Clampett, who shared the first-round lead, carded a 3-under 69 in round two. Jones and Clampett finished 36 holes at 7-under-par 137.
Jeff Brehaut carded a 5-under 67 to move into third place at minus-6.
Jim Rutledge and P.H. Horgan III both carded 4-under 68s to join Barry Lane (69) in fourth place at 4-under-par 140.
The top-5 finishers in this tournament will receive full exemptions on the Champions Tour next season, while the next seven finishers (Nos. 6-12) will get conditional status for 2013. Additionally, the top-30 finishers will be eligible to compete for spots in open qualifiers at all co-sponsored events.
Jones, who made five Champions Tour starts this year, got off to a flying start with four birdies in the first five holes. He stumbled to bogeys on the sixth and ninth to make the turn at 3-under.
The 55-year-old birdied the 11th and came right back with an eagle on the par-4 12th. Jones wrapped birdies at 14 and 16 around a bogey on the 15th.
Clampett tripped to a bogey at the first, but got that shot right back as he birdied the second. He carded four birdies in a 6-hole stretch from the fifth to jump to 8-under.
The CBS golf commentator faltered to a double-bogey on the 12th. He got one stroke back with a birdie on the par-5 15th.
Damon Green, who caddies for Zach Johnson on the PGA Tour, stumbled to 2-over 74. Green had shared the first-round lead with Clampett, but dropped into a tie for 11th at minus-2.
Defending champion Jeff Freeman is back in the field after ending in 61st place on the Champions Tour money list this season. Freeman posted a 3-under 69 to climb into a tie for 17th at 1-under-par 143.
NOTES: The $200,000 purse for this event will be divided amongst the top-30 finishers, with first place garnering $30,000 ... Of the 78 golfers in the field this week, 14 have won on the PGA Tour.
