HARTFORD, Conn. – Shane Gibson scored 29 points and Justin Swidowski added 17 off the bench, including two decisive free throws in overtime to propel Sacred Heart past Yale 85-82.
After Yale's (0-1) Austin Morgan missed the second of two free throws with 16 seconds left to give the Bulldogs a 76-74 advantage, Shane Gibson scored a layup with 8 seconds left to force the game into overtime.
After Sacred Heart (1-0) jumped out to a five-point lead to begin the overtime period, Gibson's jumpshot and Louis Montes' layup with 1:27 left cut the deficit to 82-81.
Following missed 3-point shot by Yale, Swidowski was fouled with 55 seconds left. He made both free-throws to give Sacred Heart the lead for good, 83-82.
Austin Morgan missed two 3-point shots in the final 40 seconds and Steve Glowiak hit two free throws in the final seconds to seal the victory.
