Warriors play host to Grizzlies

The Golden State Warriors host the Memphis Grizzlies tonight in the home opener for a Warriors team the pulled out a hard-fought win Wednesday night.

The Warriors defeated the Phoenix Suns, 87-85, in Phoenix on a night when Stephen Curry, David Lee and Andrew Bogut each failed to break double figures in scoring.

"We made some mistakes, we missed shots, but if you would have told me coming in that David Lee and Steph Curry would go 4-30, I'd say we'd be in trouble," Golden State head coach Mark Jackson remarked after the win.

Carl Landry came off the bench with 17 points, including 12 in the fourth quarter. He scored the go-ahead bucket with 1:22 left and the Suns didn't convert a couple of late looks that could've won the game.

Landry wasn't the only big bench contributor in the season opener. Brandon Rush, who lost the starting small-forward battle to rookie Harrison Barnes, had 14 and Jarrett Jack netted 10 points and seven assists.

The Warriors held the Suns to 19 percent shooting from the 3-point line Wednesday and outrebounded Phoenix.

Memphis fell to the Los Angeles Clippers, 101-92, on Wednesday night in rematch of last season's first round of the playoffs, which the Clippers won in seven games.

Zach Randolph had 15 points and 16 rebounds and the great Grizzlies frontcourt had a good night. Rudy Gay picked up 25 points and Marc Gasol chipped in 20, but Randolph wasn't satisfied.

"We didn't get defensive stops and I didn't play good," Randolph said afterward. "We broke down on some defensive plays toward the end. We battled, but we have to give them a lot of credit and our team just has to get better. We will put this one behind us and get ready for Golden State."

The Grizzlies will need to improve their 3-point shooting (14.3 percent against the Clips) and stopping the opposition. The Clippers shot 51.4 percent from the field in the season opener.

Memphis has an outstanding starting five, but will need more bench production. Head coach Lionel Hollins only played four guys off the bench and they combined for 17 points. Conversely, the Clippers had 49 points from their non- starters, but that is one of the best reserve units in the league.

The all-time series between the Grizzlies and Warriors is knotted at 32-32, but Memphis swept all four games last season.
