Cleveland, OH – The Cleveland Indians exercised the 2013 club option on pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez, while declining the options on pitcher Roberto Hernandez and designated hitter Travis Hafner.
Jimenez went 9-17 with a 5.40 ERA in 31 starts for the Indians in 2012. He will make $5.75 million in 2013.
The 28-year-old has struggled since his breakout 2010 season with the Colorado Rockies, when he went 19-8 with a 2.88 ERA in 33 starts. Jimenez is 19-30 with a 5.03 ERA over the last two years.
Hernandez went 0-3 with a 7.53 ERA in three starts for the Indians last season.
Hafner hit just .228 with 12 homers and 34 RBI in 66 games for Cleveland in 2012. Surgery on his right knee and a herniated disc in his back shelved him for roughly three months combined.
In 1,101 career games with the Texas Rangers and Indians, Hafner has hit .278 with 201 homers and 694 RBI.
Hafner and Hernandez, now free agents, were set to make $13 million and $6 million, respectively.
In addition, new manager Terry Francona announced that Sandy Alomar will return as bench coach. The staff is rounded out by Mickey Callaway (pitching coach), Ty Van Burkleo (hitting), Kevin Cash (bullpen), Mike Sarbaugh (first base) and Brad Mills (third base).
