Sunderland captain Lee Cattermole signed a new four-year contract with the club on Monday that ties him to the Black Cats until 2016.

The midfielder joined Sunderland from Wigan in 2009 and his contract was set to expire at the end of the current campaign.

Cattermole was appointed captain of the club prior to the 2010-11 season, but has had problems staying on the field at times having collected five red cards since his arrival at the Stadium of Light.

The 24-year-old represented England at the Under-21 level and has featured in 20 games or more in each of his first three seasons with Sunderland.
