Miami, FL – The Miami Marlins fired manager Ozzie Guillen on Tuesday, after just one season at the helm.
"After careful consideration following the disappointment of the 2012 season, we decided to dismiss Ozzie," said Marlins president of baseball operations Larry Beinfest. "Our managerial search begins immediately and our hope is that a new manager, along with roster improvements, will restore a winning culture."
Hired after a successful eight-year stint with the Chicago White Sox, Guillen struggled to lead the newly-christened franchise to a 69-93 record which was good enough for last place in the NL East.
The 48-year-old fiery native of Venezuela was hired on Sept. 28, 2011, shortly after the Florida Marlins completed their final campaign. He was signed to a four-year contract worth a reported $10 million.
Despite a reshaped roster and brand-new downtown stadium, the Marlins struggled out of the gate and dropped out of contention for the division crown for good thanks to a 5-18 stretch from June 1-26.
Guillen's managerial record stands at 747-710, including an AL Central crown and World Series victory in 2005.
