Moscow, Russia – Second-seeded Marion Bartoli was a second-round upset victim, while former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki and reigning champion Dominika Cibulkova reached the quarterfinals at the Kremlin Cup tennis event.
Swedish veteran Sofia Arvidsson drilled the Frenchwoman Bartoli 6-3, 6-0, while a third-seeded Wozniacki waltzed past Poland's Urszula Radwanska 6-1, 6-3 and a fifth-seeded Cibulkova whipped Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova 6-2, 6-3 on the indoor hardcourts at Olympic Stadium. Wozniacki and Cibulkova will do battle in Friday's quarterfinals.
Cibulkova beat Estonian Kaia Kanepi in last year's Moscow finale.
Another second-round affair saw Klara Zakopalova upend eighth-seeded fellow Czech Lucie Safarova 6-4, 6-4.
In some opening-round action on Day 3, seventh-seeded Russian favorite Maria Kirilenko handled wild card compatriot Elena Vesnina 7-5, 6-1 and Russian qualifier Valeria Solovieva leveled Ukrainian qualifier Elina Svitolina 6-4, 6-2.
Kirilenko was a Moscow runner-up two years ago.
In some more first-round play on Thursday, top-seeded Aussie Samantha Stosur will take on Frenchwoman Alize Cornet, fourth-seeded former top-ranked Serb Ana Ivanovic will face Solovieva, and Kirilenko will be opposed by Kazakhstan's Yaroslava Shvedova.
The 2012 winner of this $740,000 tournament will collect $122,000.
