Federer, Djokovic, Murray reach Shanghai quarters

This week's top-five seeds, including Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and reigning two-time champion Andy Murray, all reached the quarterfinals at the $3.5 million Shanghai Masters, the eighth of nine ATP Masters events this year.

The world No. 1 and 2010 Shanghai runner-up Federer had to come from behind to beat 13th-seeded good friend and fellow Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-0 on the hardcourts at Qi Zhong Tennis Center. Federer needed just under two hours to advance.

Next up for the super Swiss will be 10th-seeded Croat Marin Cilic.

Federer will remain atop the ATP World Tour rankings for a 300th week next week. He already holds the record for most weeks at No. 1.

Meanwhile, the second-seeded former No. 1 Djokovic handled Spanish left- hander Feliciano Lopez 6-3, 6-3 and the third-seeded Murray blitzed overmatched Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-2, 6-2.

Djokovic smacked 12 aces on Day 5.

"I'm trying to enjoy the efficiency of my serve," Djokovic said. "I'm not very well known around the tour for big serving. But so far in this tournament, and also in Beijing, it has been working very well for me. It has been giving me a lot of free points, a lot of confidence into the matches."

Djokovic, who is now 50-1 against non-Top-10 players this year, is fresh off his title in Beijing last week.

The U.S. Open champion and Olympic gold medalist Murray captured his second straight Shanghai title by beating Spaniard David Ferrer in last year's finale at Qi Zhong.

Djokovic's quarterfinal opponent on Friday will be German Tommy Haas, while Murray will take on Czech veteran Radek Stepanek.

Fourth-seeded Czech Tomas Berdych outlasted American Sam Querrey 6-2, 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, while fifth-seeded Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga doused Cypriot and fellow former Aussie Open runner-up Marcos Baghdatis 6-2, 7-6 (7-2). Berdych and Tsonga will square off in the round of eight.

Tsonga was last week's Beijing runner-up to Djokovic.

In other third-round action, Haas upended sixth-seeded Serb Janko Tipsarevic 6-2, 6-1, Stepanek ousted eighth-seeded American John Isner 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3 and Cilic overcame Spanish southpaw Fernando Verdasco 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.

The 2012 Shanghai champ will collect $669,450.
