The highly anticipated match between world Nos. 1 and 2, Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods, was delayed a day after heavy rain forced the suspension of play Wednesday at the Turkish Airlines World Golf Final.
Heavy storms pounded the Sultan Course at Antalya Golf Club. Wednesday's afternoon matches were pushed back to Thursday morning with the semifinals on tap for Thursday afternoon.
While all four afternoon matches were postponed, none was more anticipated than the Woods/McIlroy match. Unfortunately, due to the structure of the tournament, the battle may not mean much.
McIlroy will need a minor miracle to advance after he fell to Charl Schwartzel Wednesday morning. Woods bested Matt Kuchar in the morning session and both he and Kuchar have one point. Schwartzel has two and will advance.
If McIlroy defeats Woods, and Schwartzel bests Kuchar, everyone in that pool will have one point. The tie-breaker is total strokes under par in these stoke-play matches and McIlroy is last at 5-over.
In the other pool, Justin Rose topped Ryder Cup teammate Lee Westwood Wednesday morning. Rose has two points and will move on to the semifinals.
Rose will face reigning U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson Thursday morning. Simpson fired a 6-under 65 in the morning to beat Hunter Mahan, who is winless, but, like McIlroy, can get into the mix with a win Thursday over Westwood.
