Manchester United got two early goals en route to a 3-0 victory over Newcastle on Sunday at Sports Direct Arena.

The result lifts United into second place in the Premiership table along with Manchester City, while Newcastle suffers its second defeat of the season.

United has had trouble in the early part of matches so far this term, but the club got off to a flying start from a pair of corner kicks.

The first goal came after eight minutes as Robin van Persie swung the ball to the front of the net for Jonny Evans to head home his first goal of the season.

In the 15th minute United made it 2-0, this time with Wayne Rooney serving up a ball to the near post that Patrice Evra turned past goalkeeper Steve Harper with his head.

Newcastle came out stronger after the break and nearly pulled a goal back in the 50th minute when a looping header from Demba Ba struck the post, with Papiss Cisse having his rebound attempt clawed off the goal line and off the post by goalkeeper David De Gea.

But that is as close as the Magpies came to finding the net, and Tom Cleverley scored a classy third goal with 20 minutes to play when he curled a shot from the left wing inside the far post with Harper a bit too far off his line.

Tottenham 2, Aston Villa 0

London, England - Tottenham won its fourth successive league match on Sunday with a comfortable 2-0 win over Aston Villa at White Hart Lane.

Villa posed little threat going forward, but it wasn't until the 58th minute that Spurs went in front with a bit of good fortune.

Jermain Defoe's shot from inside the area appeared to be headed wide, but it struck the heel of Steven Caulker and found its way past goalkeeper Brad Guzan.

The lead was doubled nine minutes later in more convincing fashion as Clint Dempsey dropped the ball off to Aaron Lennon, who dashed past a defender before firing shot beyond the reach of Guzan.

Southampton 2, Fulham 2

Southampton, England - Jose Fonte scored a goal in each half, including the equalizer in the 90th minute, to help Southampton claim a 2-2 draw with Fulham at St Mary's on Sunday.

The Portuguese defender handed the Saints the lead after four minutes when he got on the other end of Adam Lallana's corner kick to redirect the ball past goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer with his head.

Fulham was struggling offensively but got a big break in the 69th minute when Jos Hooiveld deflected John Arne Riise's shot into his own net.

Hooiveld was involved again as Fulham took the lead in the 88th when a shot from Kieran Richardson took a slight deflection off the Southampton defender and found its way past goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga.

But Fonte rescued a point for the hosts in the final minutes with another header from a set piece to lift Southampton out of the bottom three.

Liverpool 0, Stoke City 0

Liverpool, England - Liverpool has still not registered a league win at Anfield this season as the Reds were held to a 0-0 draw by Stoke City on Sunday.

The second half saw the best chances for either team fall to Liverpool, but Luis Suarez narrowly missed the net after a great run.

Raheem Sterling then had maybe the best opportunity of the game as Daniel Agger's run helped set up the youngster for a good look at goal, only for the ball to sail wide of the near post and off the outside of the goal.

Stoke now owns five draws from its first seven games, while Liverpool has claimed just six points so far and resides in the bottom half of the league.
