NASCAR Camping World Truck Series points leader Ty Dillon won the pole for Saturday’s the fred’s 250 powered by Coca-Cola at Talladega Superspeedway.
Dillon lapped the 2.66-mile superspeedway at 177.291 miles per hour in his No. 3 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet Silverado, which is sponsored by Bass Pro Shops. It was Dillon’s third career pole — all this season — in 21 Truck Series starts.
“I didn’t do much but steer a rocket and hung on,” said Dillon. “… We really weren’t expecting to qualify that good. This is really cool.”
Dillon won an ARCA race here at Talladega last year, and was optimistic about his prospects for Saturday’s Truck Series race.
“I think we’re going to be great,” Dillon said. “I really enjoy these superspeedway races.”
Jason White, one of only three Ford drivers in the field, qualified the Gunbroker.com-sponsored No. 23 Ford F-150 at 176.617 mph, which put him on the outside of Row 1.
Third was James Buescher in the first of the Turner Motorsports Chevys, which ran 176.598 mph.
NASCAR Sprint Cup regular Aric Almirola had a great lap in the No. 5 Richie Wauters-owned Ford, qualifying fourth at 176.246 mph.
Row 3 will be Cale Gale, Dillon’s RCR teammate, and Kurt Busch in little brother Kyle’s Kyle Busch Motorsports Toyota Tundra. Todd Bodine qualified seventh, followed by his Red Horse Racing teammates Timothy Peters and Parker Kligerman, with Ron Hornaday Jr. completing the top 10.
SPEED’s race coverage on Saturday begins at 3:30 p.m. ET with the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Setup, followed by the race at 4 p.m.
Heading into tomorrow’s race, Dillon leads Buescher by a single point and Peters by 24. With just five races left in the season, the championship battle is heating up and Saturday’s race promises to be another nail-biter.
Truck notes from NASCARmedia.com:
Two-time NASCAR Mexico Series champion German Quiroga returns to the series in Kyle Busch Motorsports’ No. 51 Toyota buoyed by Nelson Piquet Jr.’s second victory of the season at LVMS. Quiroga competed twice for the team a year ago with a best finish of 16th. "Obviously, the series is getting more popular with Latin drivers. And Nelson just had his second win of the year," Quiroga said. "… We are looking forward to having the same success or even better in the future." ... Turner Motorsports now has won seven times in the series with three different drivers and ranks second, one point out of the lead, in NCWTS owner standings. … Aric Almirola makes his second appearance of the season this week in the Wauters Motorsports’ No. 5 Ford he drove to a fifth-place finish in Atlanta. He finished second to Busch at ’Dega in 2010. … Piquet’s pass of Matt Crafton in Las Vegas marked the second time this season the lead changed hands on the final lap. James Buescher displaced Timothy Peters to win at Chicagoland Speedway in July.
