Boston's Dustin Pedroia and Jacoby Ellsbury sit against Yankees

Dustin Pedroia and Jacoby Ellsbury were out of Boston's starting lineup against the New York Yankees on Monday night.

Pedroia, the 2008 AL MVP, may have injured a finger in Sunday's game at Baltimore. Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said, "Pedroia's not available to play" but wouldn't go into specifics on the second baseman.

"God I'd hate to give away secrets like that. The enemy will then be apprised of the situation," Valentine said. "He's ailing today. Hopefully, he'll be better tomorrow. But he hurt himself in the game."

Ellsbury, second in AL MVP voting last year, was 1 for 8 on Saturday and Sunday after being sidelined since Sept. 20 with an unspecified injury. Valentine decided not to start the center fielder against CC Sabathia.

"Ells hasn't played in a long time," Valentine said. "You've got the left-hander out there and the big outfield. He'll play the next two days, hopefully, if he's feeling good."
