Ryu overcomes triple-bogey to win first Japan Tour title

Hyun-Woo Ryu coughed up his lead with a triple-bogey on the 16th Sunday, but he parred the first playoff hole to beat Shingo Katayama to win the Coca-Cola Tokai Classic.

Ryu closed with a 1-under 71, while Katayama fired a 6-under 66. They finished at 6-under-par 282.

Ryu led by three before a disastrous triple-bogey on No. 16. He parred the last two to join Katayama at minus-6. Katayama, who watched Ryu struggle from the clubhouse, tripped to a bogey on No. 17.

The duo played the 18th on the West Course at Miyoshi Country Club for the playoff. Ryu claimed his first Japan Tour title when he made par and Katayama tripped to a bogey.

Kyung-Tae Kim managed a 1-under 71 to end alone in third at minus-5. Hyung- Sung Kim shot even-par 72 to take fourth at 4-under 284. Masamichi Uehira (70) grabbed fifth at minus-3.

Ryo Ishikawa and Akio Sadakata posted matching 68s and shared sixth with David Smail (72) at 2-under-par 286.
