Manchester, England – Clint Dempsey scored the game-winner in the second half as Tottenham snapped a 26-game winless drought at Old Trafford with a 3-2 win Saturday over Manchester United.
Tottenham last won at Old Trafford in 1989, but the 23-year drought ended with goals from Jan Vertonghen and Gareth Bale in the opening half, and the decider from American Dempsey seven minutes into the second half.
Dempsey scored his goal between two goals from Manchester United - in the 51st from Nani and 53rd from Shinji Kagawa - as Spurs held on for the memorable win against the record English champions.
Vertonghen put Tottenham in front in the second minute with a goal to the near post, and Bale double the lead with a brilliant half-field run that he capped with a finish from the right side of the area to the bottom left.
United manager Sir Alex Ferguson called Wayne Rooney off the bench to open the second half, and the England international set up the first goal for his side with a right-wing cross that Nani turned home at the near post.
Before the cheers ended in Manchester, Dempsey restored the two-goal lead for Spurs when he latched onto a rebound from a Bale shot and slotted into an open goal.
The wild three-minute stretch of the second half continued when Kagawa turned and fired off the inside of the right post for his second goal, but Spurs and American goalkeeper Brad Friedel were able to hold on for the win.
Rooney was the closest to splitting the points when he drove a free kick off the left post, but United saw its four-match win streak snapped as it slipped four points off the pace of first-place Chelsea.
Tottenham won for the third time during a five-game unbeaten run and sits five off the pace in fifth, two spots behind United.
Chelsea 2, Arsenal 1
London, England - Juan Mata assisted on a first-half goal for Fernando Torres and scored the match-winner eight minutes into the second half as Chelsea won 2-1 over Arsenal on Saturday at Emirates Stadium.
Torres opened the scoring 20 minutes into the game and Gervinho pulled Arsenal even three minutes before halftime, but Mata scored the game-winner off a free kick early in the second half that sailed through traffic and inside the left post.
Chelsea won for the fifth time against one draw to maintain its place atop the English Premier League, and is three points clear of second-place Everton.
Arsenal lost for the first time this season, but dropped points for the fourth time to slip seven points off the pace after just six matches.
Manchester City 2, Fulham 1
London, England - Edin Dzeko scored just three minutes from time, just over a minute after he came off the bench, to lift Manchester City to a 2-1 win over Fulham on Saturday at Craven Cottage in the English Premier League.
Sergio Aguero also scored for City, which overcame an early deficit to secure its third win and preserve its unbeaten record through six matches.
The defending champions had three draws in their first five matches, but coach Roberto Mancini was not content with a point against Fulham. Mladen Petric put the London side in front from the spot, and Aguero equalized before half.
With the last minutes ticking away, Mancini had both of his defensive midfield players off the field in favor of an attacking lineup. Dzeko provided the goal City wanted as he latched onto a poor clearance and fired into the right side.
City remained within five points of first-place Chelsea in fourth place, while Fulham lost for the third time against three wins and is seven back in eighth.
Liverpool 5, Norwich City 2
Norwich, England - Luis Suarez scored a hat trick as Liverpool crushed Norwich City, 5-2, on Saturday at Carrow Road for its first win in the English Premier League this season.
Liverpool had three losses and two draws in its first five matches, but Suarez sparked a convincing win with goals in the second, 38th and 57th minutes. Nuri Sahin and Steven Gerrard also scored for Liverpool.
Suarez was the star against Norwich, scoring three of the first four goals of the match to increase his scoring total to five goals, just one off the league lead.
Steve Morison and Grant Holt scored in the second half for Norwich, which lost for the third time to remain winless in six matches this season.
Everton 3, Southampton 1
Liverpool, England - Everton scored three times in a 13-minute stretch of the first half, with two goals from Nikica Jelavic, to overturn an early deficit in a 3-1 win over Southampton on Saturday at Goodison Park.
Leon Osman also scored for Everton, which continued its impressive start with its fourth win from six games to climb to second in the English Premier League standings. Everton is just three points off the pace of first-place Chelsea.
Osman erased the early deficit in the 25th minute, and Jelavic followed with goals in the 32nd and 38th minutes.
Gaston Ramirez scored in the sixth minute for Southampton, which lost for the fifth time in six matches to start the season.
Reading 2, Newcastle 2
Reading, England - Demba Ba scored off a spectacular volley and had a disputed goal seven minutes from time as Newcastle secured a 2-2 tie against Reading on Saturday at Madejski Stadium in the English Premier League.
Ba scored what could easily stand as the goal of the season when he run under a long looping pass Cheik Tiote and while in stride toward the goal, drove the ball into the net from the edge of the area.
Jimmy Kebe and Noel Hunt scored as Reading twice led, but Ba responded to the first deficit in the 58th with his brilliant goal and got lucky late when the ball deflected in off his hand to complete his brace.
Newcastle earned its third draw during a four-game unbeaten streak. Reading is winless this season, but managed its second draw from five matches.
Stoke City 2, Swansea City 0
Stoke-on-Trent, England - Peter Crouch scored twice in the first half to lead Stoke City to its first win this season, 2-0 win over Swansea City on Saturday at Britannia Stadium in the English Premier League.
Stoke opened the season with four straight draws before a loss at Chelsea last week, and Crouch put Stoke in the win column with his third and fourth goals already this season.
Crouch headed home a corner from Glenn Whelan in the 12th minute and completed his brace in the 36th when he converted his own rebound. Crouch has five goals in all competitions this season.
Swansea lost its third straight fixture after an impressive start where it won its first two matches and tied its third.
Sunderland 1, Wigan 0
Sunderland, England - Steven Fletcher scored his fifth goal of the season as Sunderland defeated 10-man Wigan, 1-0, on Saturday at the Stadium of Light for its first win in the English Premier League.
Fletcher joined Sunderland before the close of the summer transfer window from Wolverhampton and has been the catalyst behind an unbeaten start for the Black Cats.
Fletcher has his five goals in just four matches, and his finish to the middle of the goal in the 51st minute - four minutes after Jordi Gomez was sent off - was the difference.
Sunderland tied its first four games this season. Wigan dropped its third in a row and fourth already this season.
