Orioles welcome back Pearce

The Baltimore Orioles, in a tight race with the New York Yankees for the AL East title, claimed outfielder Steve Pearce off waivers from their division rival on Saturday.

This was the second time the Orioles picked up Pearce this season, with Baltimore sending cash considerations to New York for the 29-year-old outfielder on June 2. He played 28 games for the Orioles and batted .254 with three home runs and 14 RBI before being designated for assignment on July 21.

Pearce, who spent his first five big-league seasons with the Pirates, was picked up on July 28 by the Houston Astros, with whom he played 21 games before being dealt back to the Yankees near the trade deadline.

Overall this season, Pearce is hitting .239 with four home runs and 26 RBI.

To make room on their roster, the Orioles placed pitcher Oliver Drake on the 60-day disabled list.
