Manchester, England – Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic will be sidelined "around eight weeks" after having knee surgery, the English Premier League club announced Tuesday.
The 30-year-old Vidic was rested over the weekend as a "precautionary measure" as United downed Liverpool, 2-1, and "further medical investigation" uncovered meniscus damage in his right knee, the club said.
"The central defender was operated on this week," United announced, "and will be sidelined for about eight weeks."
Vidic ruptured the cruciate ligament in his right knee in December, and missed the final five months of last season.
United has won its last four matches, and is just one point behind first-place Chelsea after five games.
