Quebec City, QC – The top two seeds of the $220,000 Bell Challenge tennis event were ousted on Wednesday as top-seeded Dominika Cibulkova and second-seeded Yanina Wickmayer were both upset victims.
Slovakia's Cibulkova didn't even make it out of the first round as she was taken down by Belgium's Kirsten Flipkens, who rallied for a 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory.
Eighteen-year-old American qualifier Lauren Davis whipped the former world No. 12 Wickmayer of Belgium in 6-1, 6-1 fashion in 63 minutes on the indoor carpet at PEPS Laval University.
Third-seeded German Mona Barthel avoided a Day-3 upset by pasting Slovenian Petra Rampre 6-2, 6-1 in a mere 48 minutes.
Reigning champ Barbora Zahlavova Strycova of the Czech Republic, seeded sixth, had no problems in a 6-3, 6-3 win over Tatjana Malek of Germany.
Zahlavova Strycova defeated New Zealand's Marina Erakovic in last year's Quebec City finale.
Another second-round result saw French qualifier Kristina Mladenovic overcome German Annika Beck 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
The 2012 Quebec champion will earn $37,000.
