Santa Clara, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Colin Kaepernick was 6-of-12 for 59 yards and the San Francisco 49ers defeated the San Diego Chargers, 21-7, in preseason action on Sunday afternoon.

Rookie second-round selection Carlos Hyde carried the ball six times for 38 yards, Vance McDonald had three receptions for 29 yards and a touchdown for the 49ers, who scored their first touchdown in the preseason in the second quarter.

Philip Rivers completed 9-of-10 passes for 85 yards and a score, Ryan Matthews posted 22 yards on four totes and 26 yards receiving on two catches and Antonio Gates hauled in three passes for 28 yards and a score for San Diego.

Rivers found Gates for a 10-yard scoring strike for the opening quarter's lone points, capping a 10-play, 71-yard drive.

The 49ers tallied the final 21 points, scoring 10 in the second and 11 more in the fourth.

Phil Dawson booted through a 39-yard field goal and McDonald brought in a 6- yard TD pass from Blaine Gabbert in the second to give SF a 10-7 advantage.

In the fourth, Dawson split the uprights from 28 yards out and Glenn Winston broke off a 27-yard TD run.
