49ers cut QB Josh Johnson

The San Francisco 49ers released quarterback Josh Johnson and 20 other players on Friday in order to meet the NFL's required 53-man roster limit.

Johnson threw for 219 yards and two touchdowns in four preseason games for the 49ers.

In 26 career NFL games with Tampa Bay, Johnson has thrown for 1,042 yards, five touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

San Francisco also cut running back Rock Cartwright, who spent the last two seasons with the Raiders. In 154 career contests with Washington and Oakland, Cartwright had rushed for 956 yards and six touchdowns.

Linebackers Kenny Rowe, Cam Johnson, Michael Wilhoite, Joe Holland, Ikaika Alama-Francis and Eric Bakhtiari, tackles Derek Hall, Mike Person and Kenny Wiggins, defensive tackles Tony Jerod-Eddie and Matthew Masifilo, cornerback Anthony Mosley, tight ends Kyle Nelson and Konrad Reuland, guard Al Netter, wide receivers Chris Owusu, Nathan Palmer and Brett Swain and safety Michael Thomas were also released.

In addition, the 49ers traded safety Colin Jones to the Carolina Panthers for an undisclosed draft pick.
