Cam Newton passed for a touchdown while Gary Barnidge caught one in late to give the Carolina Panthers a 17-12 win over the New York Jets in preseason action.

Newton passed for 60 yards on 6-of-15 attempts and ran for 16 yards and tossed a score to Louis Murphy for the Panthers, who improved to 2-1 in the preseason.

Mark Sanchez was 11-for-18 with 123 yards and an interception, while Tim Tebow went 4-for-14 with 55 yards and an interception along with 45 yards on five carries for the Jets, who fell to 0-3 on the preseason.

The Jets have scored just 18 points in the preseason, all on field goals from either Nick Folk or Josh Brown.

The Jets lost tight end Dustin Keller to a right hamstring injury in the first quarter, while Carolina running back Jonathan Stewart left the game on a cart in the second quarter with a right ankle injury.

Olindo Mare got the scoring started with a 33-yard field goal to give Carolina a 3-0 lead just under seven minutes in, but New York countered on its next drive with a 46-yard field goal from Folk.

Brown and Folk hit field goals of 34 and 22 yards 1 1/2 minutes apart with a Newton fumble separating the two field goals to give the Jets a 9-3 lead with 4 1/2 minutes to play in the second quarter.

Newton, though, atoned for his sin two drives later after Sanchez was picked off as he found Murphy in the back of the end zone from three yards out to give the team a 10-9 lead going into the locker room.

The only points of the third quarter came late in the frame when Folk hit a 30-yard field goal to give the Jets a 12-10 lead.

Carolina, though, answered on its next drive as the team went 76 yards in nine plays and Barnidge capped it with a one-yard touchdown catch from Derek Anderson for a 17-12 lead with 11 1/2 minutes to play.

Tebow got the Jets down to the Carolina 27 on the last drive of the game, but his last four passes fell incomplete to end the game.
