Sunderland signed French striker Louis Saha to a one-year contract Thursday.

Saha, 34, was released by Tottenham at the end of last season. He started his career with Metz in France, but has played most of his career in England. He has also played for Newcastle, Fulham, Manchester United and Everton.

"I'm sure he will be a great addition to our squad in an area we recognize needs strengthening and I'm delighted we have been able to complete the deal ahead of our first game of the season," Sunderland coach Martin O'Neill said.

"Louis is a striker whose abilities have been proven at the very highest level and he brings with him a raft of experience of top-flight football."

Saha moved from Fulham to United for almost $20 million in 2004, and scored 42 goals 124 appearances. He also had a high scoring rate at Fulham and Everton.

He has played 20 times for France.
