The New York Mets acquired catcher Kelly Shoppach from the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday for a player to be named.

Shoppach will likely serve as a backup to Josh Thole down the stretch and as a power bat off the bench. In 48 games for the Red Sox this season, Shoppach is hitting .250 with five homers, a .327 on-base percentage and a .471 slugging percentage.

This is Shoppach's first time in the National League, having played with Boston, Cleveland and Tampa Bay. In 508 career games over eight seasons, Shoppach has a .227 batting average, 64 homers, a .316 on-base percentage and a .422 slugging percentage.
