Mariners place 1B Carp on DL, recall Smoak

The Seattle Mariners placed first baseman Mike Carp on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a strained left groin and recalled first baseman Justin Smoak from Triple-A Tacoma.

Carp, 26, left Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Angels in the fifth inning after experiencing discomfort while stretching for a throw.

This will be his third stint on the DL this season. His previous two trips to the DL were caused by a right shoulder injury, which he originally suffered after diving on the artificial turf at the Tokyo Dome during Seattle's season- opening series against the Oakland Athletics.

In 49 games with the M's this season, Carp is hitting .206 with five home runs and 20 RBI.

Smoak, 25, was previously optioned to Tacoma on July 23 while mired in a 1- for-23 slump which dropped his big league average to .189. Despite struggling at the major league level this season, he still leads the team in home runs with 13 and is fourth on the club with 38 RBI in 90 games.
