The United States gun for their third consecutive gold medal in women's soccer on Thursday, and they'll be up against a familiar opponent. Not only do the USWNT have a shot at a gold medal, but they also have a shot at revenge on Japan, the team that defeated them in the final of last year's World Cup.
Japan looked like they might have taken a slight step backwards when they drew successive games against Sweden and South Africa in less than impressive fashion, but they've been nothing short of fantastic so far in the knockout rounds. Yuki Ogimi has emerged as their biggest attacking star, and their defense was good enough to keep Marta and Cristiane off the scoresheet in their quarterfinal against Brazil.
The United States are coming off of a dramatic 4-3 win over Canada, where Alex Morgan scored the latest goal in Olympic soccer history to win the match for the USWNT before it headed to penalties. The goal was her 20th of 2012 and took her to 30 career USWNT goals in just 43 appearances. The United States' leading scorer in the Olympics, Abby Wambach, also scored in that game to take her tally to five goals in the tournament.
