Wolfsburg, Germany – Wolfsburg striker Patrick Helmes tore the ACL in his right knee Saturday for the second time, the German club said Sunday.
Helmes, 28, suffered the same injury in 2009 at Bayer Leverkusen. He scored 13 goals in 24 appearances for Wolfsburg since joining the club in January 2011. He is now set to be sidelined for at least six months.
"Patrick was heading in the right direction and this is a bitter blow for him and for the whole team," Wolfsburg coach Felix Magath said.
Helmes has two goals in 13 matches for Germany.
