Kershaw, Kemp help Dodgers top Cubs

Los Angeles, CA – Clayton Kershaw tossed seven strong innings and Matt Kemp hit a two-run home run to lift the Los Angels Dodgers over the Chicago Cubs, 3-1, in the second of three games at Dodger Stadium.

Kershaw (9-6) allowed one run on three hits and two walks while striking out seven in the Dodgers' second straight win on the heels of a three-game losing streak.

Kershaw also had two of Los Angeles' seven hits.

Chris Volstad (0-8) surrendered both runs on six hits and a walk over seven innings to remain winless in his last 21 starts. He has not recorded a win since July 10, 2011, and is 0-13 in that span.

"Volstad pitched great. It was as good as we've seen," Cubs manager Dale Sveum said. "It's unfortunate he had to be matched up against last year's Cy Young winner."

Alfonso Soriano knocked in the lone run for Chicago, which has dropped four straight.

Chicago broke the scoreless tie in the top of the fourth inning when Darwin Barney hit a leadoff single and rounded the bases two batters later on Soriano's double into the left-center field gap.

But the Dodgers answered in the bottom of the frame with Kemp's two-run home run to right-center field that bounced off the glove of Cubs center fielder Joe Mather and over the wall as he made a leaping attempt at the ball.

Mark Ellis singled prior to Kemp's 16th homer of the year.

"I thought it was going to be a home run, but it looked like I got a little help by looking at the jumbotron," Kemp said about his homer.

Kershaw stranded the tying run on second in the fifth and seventh innings before Los Angeles added an insurance run in the eighth when Shane Victorino doubled and later scored on an error by shortstop Starlin Castro on a hard grounder through the left side of the infield by Hanley Ramirez.

Kenley Jansen worked a perfect ninth to record his 21st save of the year.

Game Notes

Kershaw improved to 3-1 in four career starts against the Cubs...Volstad fell to 3-5 in eight career starts against Los Angeles...Chicago is now 11-44 this season when scoring three runs or less...It was Barney's 91st straight game without recording an error at second base, breaking Ryne Sandberg's single- season franchise record set from June 21, 1989, through the end of the season.
