Washington, DC – Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova defeated Kai-Chen Chang in decisive fashion as she cruised in her quarterfinal matchup on Thursday at the $220,000 Citi Open tennis event.
The top-seeded Russian needed just 93 minutes to defeat the Chinese Taipei native in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4 on the hardcourts at the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center.
The 21-year-old Pavlyuchenkova advances to face American Vania King, who outlasted compatriot Coco Vandeweghe in a 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 triumph.
Vandeweghe, who reached her first-ever WTA final in Stanford two weeks ago, smashed five aces, but committed seven double faults to lead to her demise.
Another quarterfinal saw a pair of Slovaks do battle as Magdalena Rybarikova downed Jana Cepelova 6-2, 6-4 to move into the semifinals where American Sloane Stephens awaits.
The third-seeded Stephens made quick work of wild card Eugenie Bouchard, ousting the Canadian in 67 minutes with a 6-4, 6-4 straight-set victory.
The 2012 D.C. champion will collect $37,000.
