Werder Bremen signed Belgian international Kevin de Bruyne from Chelsea on Thursday on a one-year loan deal.

De Bruyne, 21, joined Chelsea in January from Genk but was loaned back to the Belgium club for the remainder of last season.

Capped twice for Belgium, De Bruyne won't be part of the European champions' plans in 2012-13, as he departs England for Germany to join Bremen. The winger or midfielder scored 17 times in 92 games for Genk from 2008-12.

"We're delighted to have secured Kevin's signing. He has proven himself many times in the last few seasons and should help enhance our game," Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf said.

De Bruyne was excited about the chance to play in the Bundesliga.

"It's great that my transfer to Bremen is now settled," he said. "Werder have a great tradition and compete in one of the best leagues in Europe in packed- out stadiums. I want to play some good football and be successful with my new teammates."
