Pirates option McCutchen to make room for Qualls

The Pittsburgh Pirates optioned pitcher Daniel McCutchen to Triple-A Indianapolis Wednesday to make room for the newly acquired Chad Qualls.

The 33-year-old journeyman reliever, Qualls, was brought in from the New York Yankees in a swap for utility man Casey McGehee before Tuesday's trade deadline.

Qualls, who will be with his third team this season, is 2-1 with a 4.89 ERA in 38 2/3 innings with the Philadelphia Phillies and Yankees.

McCutchen, 29, was recalled Tuesday and is 5-2 with a 3.56 earned run average in 26 games -- one start -- with Indianapolis this season.
