They have been one of the most dominating beach volleyball duos of all time, so when Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor have a minor slip-up, such as losing a set, it's nearly impossible to ignore.
Despite their pool play victory against Stefanie and Doris Schwaiger of Austria on Wednesday night, the real news is that the match was the first in the Olympic careers of Walsh and May-Treanor in which they lost a set.
The streak dates back to the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, when the two went unbeaten in seven matches to win gold, continuing through 2008 in Beijing when Walsh and May-Treanor repeated as champions.
In London, the two had one their first two matches without losing a set, meaning they had won 16 consecutive matches and 32 sets.
Despite the victory Wednesday, Walsh spoke candidly as to her feelings on the streak being snapped.
"I was furious," she said. "It's still with me. I want to go to the practice court and fix it."
After losing the first set of the match 21-17, the duo responded to win the second and deciding third set 21-8 and 15-10, respectively.
Walsh and May-Treanor will now advance to single-elimination play beginning this weekend as they shoot for their third consecutive gold medal in beach volleyball.
