Phillies send Pence to San Francisco

Philadelphia, PA – Mere minutes after the rival Dodgers acquired Shane Victorino, the Giants purged another Philadelphia outfielder by acquiring Hunter Pence from the Phillies.

Pence, acquired by Philadelphia at last year's trade deadline, heads to a Giants club competing with Los Angeles for the NL West title. He is likely to be their regular right fielder after serving in that role for nearly his entire career.

Heading to the Phillies are outfielder Nate Schierholtz, catching prospect Tommy Joseph, who played for the United States in this year's Futures Game, and minor league pitcher Seth Rosin. The Giants also got cash in the deal.

The 29-year-old is not merely a rental for San Francisco, as he is eligible for arbitration one final time this offseason before he can become a free agent the following year. He is making a little more than $10 million this offseason, so the Phillies probably viewed his potential 2013 salary as too much to bear.

Pence's numbers are down in 2012 after putting up career statistics in 2011. In 101 games this season, Pence is batting .271 with a .336 on-base percentage and a .447 slugging percentage; this comes after a 2011 split between Houston and Philadelphia in which he batted .314 with a .370 OBP and .502 SLG.

Before his brief tenure with the Phillies, Pence spent parts of five seasons in Houston as its full-time right fielder. He was traded to Philadelphia for regarded prospects Jonathan Singleton and Jarred Cosart and two others before Tuesday's move to San Francisco.

Pence, who has 17 homers and 15 doubles this season, has 131 homers and 172 doubles in 835 career games, 680 with Houston.

Schierholtz has spent his entire six-year career with the Giants in right field and has a .257 batting average, .327 on-base percentage and .429 slugging percentage in 77 games this year. He has five homers, the last two of which came in Philadelphia on July 22.

In 503 career games, Schierholtz, 28, has a .270 average, .319 OBP and .412 SLG with 23 homers, 72 doubles and 15 triples.

Joseph, primarily a catcher, was a second-round pick in 2009 and is currently playing for the Giants' Double-A club in Richmond. In 80 games this season, Joseph is batting .260 with a .313 on-base percentage and .391 slugging percentage.

Rosin, a fourth-round pick in 2010, is 2-1 with a 4.31 earned run average and 10 saves in 34 games for Single-A San Jose this season.
