Sheng Lei of China defeated Egypt's Alaaeldin Abouelkassem in the gold medal match for men's fencing individual foil Tuesday at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Lei won 15-13, breaking an 11-11 tie after two periods with a 4-2 advantage in the third.
Lei won the first period, 8-5, but gave away the lead losing 3-6 in the second to set up the winner-take-all final stanza. The gold is China's 11th of the Olympics so far, and 20th overall. South Korea's Byungchul Choi took the bronze medal by beating Andrea Baldini, 15-14, in the consolation match. Abouelkassem's silver was Egypt's first medal so far in London.
The United States had two competitors in the event. Alexander Massialas and Race Imboden made it as far as the Round of 16 out of an original field of 64 before losing.
