Mike Krzyzewski's tenure with Team USA's basketball squad has been a mutually beneficial one. Krzyzewski coached Team USA to gold at the 2008 Olympics, and has his team in position to claim the same medal in 2012, while Duke won the 2010 NCAA Tournament after Krzyzewski applied some of the strategies gleaned from helming Team USA to his Blue Devils. It's no wonder that USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo wants Krzyzewski to stay on as head coach of Team USA beyond London.
Colangelo told reporters on Monday that, while Krzyzewski has said publicly that he thinks this is his last hurrah with the American team, he hasn't given up hope on wooing him for more years. Colangelo has previously related the story of convincing Krzyzewski to come back over pizza and wine after the Beijing Olympics, and thinks he might have to do the same after London.
"We’ll have pizza and wine again," Colangelo said. "We’ll see if it works a second time."
Krzyzewski-coached Team USA squads have yet to lose in pool play, and their only non-gold result in international competition came at the 2006 FIBA World Championship.
