London, England – Candace Parker recorded a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds to lead the United States to a resounding 90-38 victory over Angola in the women's Olympic basketball tournament on Monday.
"I thought it was a tremendous performance by Candace," said Team USA head coach Geno Auriemma. "We saw a little bit of everything that she's capable of doing. There are things that Candace can do that no other player can do. Tonight was a perfect example of that. And it started right from the beginning of the game."
Seimone Augustus scored 13 points and Maya Moore added 11 points, five rebounds and four assists for the Americans, who have won each of the last four Olympic gold medals.
The lone blemish for the Americans in the lopsided win was their three-point shooting. They made just 2-of-17 threes. Conversely, the U.S. women shot 69 percent (34-of-49) from inside the arc.
The United States posted an 81-56 win over Croatia in their Olympic opener on Saturday.
Sonia Guadalupe had 11 points for Angola, which was coming off a 22-point loss to Turkey.
Angola was limited to single digits in scoring in both the second (six) and fourth quarters (nine).
The Americans led 22-12 after the opening 10 minutes, but, like their opponent, suffered through a scoring drought as the second quarter remained scoreless until Parker converted her own miss from inside the paint with 6:19 remaining.
Team USA then put together an 11-0 run, extending its lead to 37-14 on a bucket by Augustus. The Americans were up 41-18 at halftime and continued to pull away following the break, building a 40-point cushion in the third quarter against an overmatched Angola squad.
