Abigail Johnston and Kelci Bryant won the United States' first Olympic diving medal since 2000 on Sunday, while Canada's Emilie Heymans made history by capturing a bronze alongside Jennifer Abel.

Both teams finished well behind heavily favored Wu Minxia and He Zi of China in the women's synchronized 3-meter springboard.

Johnston and Bryant ended with 321.90 points -- 24.30 behind the Chinese -- for the U.S.'s first medal in the sport since Laura Wilkinson's platform gold at the Sydney Olympics.

Heymans, meanwhile, became the first female diver to make the podium at four consecutive games. She also has three platform medals -- three silver and one bronze. The Canadians were 5.10 points behind the Americans.

The Chinese continued their stranglehold on the sport at the games.

They entered London having won all eight events at the world championships in February and 13 of the last 16 Olympic gold medals, including seven of eight at Beijing four years ago.

Wu won her third straight Olympic synchro gold and fifth medal overall, moving her within one of countrywoman Guo Jingjing's record six diving medals. She and He finished with 346.20 points.
