London, England – The United States will try to continue its success at the North Greenwich Arena on Monday when the men take aim at their first team gymnasitics medal since 1984.
Led by Danell Leyva, the 2008 bronze medalists will try to hold off China, the defending champions, Japan and Great Britain. For the Japanese to improve their performance, three-time world all-around champion Kohei Uchimura must have a better showing if the country wants to better its 2008 silver showing.
Four more swimming medals will be awarded Monday, with Ryan Lochte going for his third of the London Olympics. Michael Phelps will be back in the pool, too, a day after the Americans were part of the 400-meter freestyle relay team that lost gold to France.
Lochte, who was chased down on the anchor leg of the relay, will swim in the packed final of the 200 free. Men's 400-meter champion Sun Yang of South Korea and silver medalist Park Tae-hwan of South Korea are also in the final.
Missy Franklin, the 17-year-old rising American star, will try to win gold in the women's 100-meter backstroke. Matthew Grevers will swim in the 100-meter backstroke final after qualifying fastest and U.S. teammates Rebecca Soni and Breeja Larson give their country a good shot to medal in the women's 100-meter breaststroke.
Phelps has heats and semifinals for the 200-meter butterfly, which he has won in each of the last two Olympics.
Tennis picks back up after inclement weather interrupted the tournament on Sunday.
Among those with first-round matches scheduled are Americans Andy Roddick and Venus Williams, as well as women's world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka of Belarus.
Swiss star Roger Federer is due to play a second-round singles match against Frenchman Julien Benneteau, as well as a first-round doubles match with Stanislas Wawrinka. The pair won gold in Beijing four years ago.
Serena Williams is scheduled for a second-round match against Poland's Urszula Radwanska. The Williams sisters are also set for their first-round doubles match.
The women's basketball tournament continues Monday with preliminary round games, and the United States has its second test. The Americans breezed past Croatia on Saturday to notch their 34th consecutive victory, and will try to move to 2-0 in Group A against Angola.
Australia, the silver medalist in 2008, faces France in a Group B contest. The Aussies handled Great Britain in their first matchup. The British face Canada on Monday.
Men's shooting will hand out medals for men's 10-meter air rifle. Italian sharpshooter and world No. 1 Niccolo Campriani aims for his first Olympic gold medal.
Also, men's qualifying in skeet gets underway.
The men's synchronized 10-meter diving event also takes place on Monday and China's Cao Yuan and Zhang Yanquan enter the competition as favorites. Great Britain's Tom Daley and Pete Waterfield are also expected to be in medal contention.
Judo will hand out medals in the men's 73kg as well as the women's 57kg. In weightlifting, gold will be on the line in men's 62kg and women's 58kg.
Monday will also see fencing medal matches in women's individual epee.
The Olympic boxing event continues with the start of the flyweight (52kg) and light heavyweight (81kg) competitions.
The women take their turn on Monday in handball, volleyball and water polo, while the men kick off their field hockey tournament.
There are also men's and women's events in archery, beach volleyball, equestrian, table tennis, rowing, sailing, canoe slalom and badminton.
