Kimberly Rhode became the first American to win a medal at five straight Olympics, taking gold in the women's skeet shooting competition at the London Games.
Rhode was nearly perfect in Sunday's event, setting an Olympic record by hitting 74-of-75 targets in the qualification round. She then tied a world record by hitting on all 25 of her shots in the final round to take the gold. By hitting 99-of-100 targets she tied another world record and easily outdistanced China's Wei Ning, who hit eight fewer targets than Rhode to win silver.
"There are really no words to describe it," Rhode said of her achievement. "It's totally emotional."
The 33-year-old Rhode competed in the double trap event at the 1996, 2000 and 2004 Summer Games, winning two golds and a bronze at those Olympics before taking silver in the skeet competition four years ago in Beijing.
Rhode tied the all-time mark for Olympic medals in women's shooting, joining Russia's Marina Dobrancheva-Logvinenko, Mariya Grozdeva of Bulgaria and Jasna Sekaric, who won a total of five medals while competing for both Yugoslavia and Serbia and Montenegro.
However, now Rhode stands alone as the first woman to win three gold medals in shooting.
Danka Bartekova of Slovakia won a shoot-off against Russia's Marina Belikova to take the bronze.
