Canada's Ryan Cochrane was relieved to have backed his way into Saturday's final for the 400-meter freestyle, only to find out hours later he hadn't made it at all.
The Canadian record holder in the event got the eighth and final qualifying spot when reigning Olympic gold medalist Park Tae-hwan was disqualified because of a false start in his morning heat.
"Snuck right in that final for tonight! I'm excited to see how it all pans out..." Cochrane tweeted, before adding: "anything can happen at the olympics!"
And it did.
FINA overturned Park's disqualification after a protest from South Korea's swimming federation, moving him to fourth place and into the final and bumping Cochrane to ninth -- the first man out.
