Astros claim INF Pearce

The Houston Astros claimed infielder Steve Pearce off waivers Saturday along with four other roster moves.

The Astros also purchased the contract of pitcher Armando Galarraga from Triple-A Oklahoma City, optioned pitcher Fernando Abad to Triple-A, and outrighted pitchers Enerio Del Rosario and Aneury Rodriguez to the Triple-A squad.

Pearce, 28, was hitting .254 with three home runs, four doubles and 14 RBI in 28 games for the Baltimore Orioles this season. He began the season with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees and was designated for assignment by the Orioles last Sunday. Pearce has played 213 career games in the big leagues with Pittsburgh (2007-11) and Baltimore.

Galarraga, 30, is 3-2 with a 3.97 earned-run average in 10 starts with Houston's Class-A team in Lexington and Oklahoma City. Galarraga is most known for throwing what would have been a perfect game with the Detroit Tigers in 2010, only to have it taken away on a blown call at first base by umpire Jim Joyce.

Del Rosario, 26, was outrighted after posting a 7.80 ERA in 15 appearances for the Astros this season, while Abad appeared in 30 games for Houston and compiled a 3.86 ERA.

Rodriguez, 24, has spent the majority of the season in Triple-A, where he recorded a 3-7 record with a 6.67 ERA in 23 appearances -- 13 starts.
