American rower Taylor Ritzel says she is devastated by the tragedy in her hometown of Aurora in which 12 people were killed when a gunman opened fire in a crowded movie theater.

Ritzel, who is competing in the women's eight at the London Olympics, told the Associated Press in a statement she has the victims and their families in her thoughts.

Ritzel says: "I grew up in Aurora and am proud to call it home. Now more than ever, as I prepare to compete here in London, I will do everything in my power to make Colorado proud."

Ritzel arrived for the Olympics on July 17, three days before the deadly shooting took place.

She took part in team practice Wednesday at Dorney Lake. The heats for the women's eight begin Sunday.
