Olympics sports court gives 1st ruling in London

The top court in international sports has ordered South Africa to select rider Alexander Peternell in equestrian eventing.

This was the first case handled by the Court of Arbitration for Sport's special London Games division.

Peternell won his second appeal at CAS after a previous ruling decided that South Africa should not have selected the lower-ranked Paul Hart. Despite the first verdict, the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee withdrew Hart but did not enter Peternell for the games.

CAS says its three-lawyer panel upheld Peternell's request and ordered the South African committee to include him on the team.

Eventing consists of dressage, cross-country and jumping. Competition begins Saturday and ends Tuesday.
