The U.S. softball team scored the silver medal at the ISF World Championship after an overtime loss to Japan, 2-1, on July 22 in Whitehorse, Y.T. The defeat was the team's lone loss in the tournament, and the U.S. finished with a 9-1 record. Overall, the U.S. outscored its opponents 86-6.
RECORD-SETTING PERFORMANCE
Olympian Evan Jager (Algonquin, Ill.) set a new American record in the steeplechase with a third-place finish at the Diamond League competition on July 20 in Monaco. Aries Merritt (Marietta, Ga.) won the 110-meter hurdles event, while Jesse Williams (Raleigh, N.C.) captured the high jump victory.
BASEBALL
Team USA's collegiate national team held off a furious ninth-inning rally to defeat the Netherlands, 4-3, and claim the bronze medal at Honkbal Week on July 22 in the Netherlands.
BASKETBALL
The U.S. women's team closed out exhibition play with a perfect 4-0 record in July. From July 16-22, Team USA routed Brazil, Olympic host Great Britain, Croatia and Turkey in preparation for the London Olympic Games. The U.S. defeated Croatia by the largest margin, 109-55.
The U.S. men's basketball team picked up three exhibition wins within one week, and remains a perfect 4-0 in exhibition play. From July 16-22, the U.S. men defeated Brazil, Great Britain and Argentina.
BOXING
The U.S. junior squad captured two opening wins at the Veles Cup in Kurgan, Russia. Team USA won seven of 13 bouts against Ireland on July 17, and defeated a local Russian team by the same margin on July 19.
CYCLING
Neko Mulally (Reading, Pa.) and Melissa Buhl (Chandler, Ariz.) captured the men's and women's pro dual slalom championships at the 2012 USA Cycling Mountain Bike Gravity Nationals in Beech Mountain, N.C. Aaron Gwin (Temecula, Calif.) and Jacqueline Harmony (Sedona, Ariz.) won the downhill titles at the event, which began on July 20.
EQUESTRIAN
Olympian Beezie Madden (Cazenovia, N.Y.) scored a second-place finish at the GCT Grand Prix on July 21 in Chantilly France.
Brandi Roenick (San Diego, Calif.) scored her sixth gold medal at the North American Junior and Young Rider Championships by winning the Dressage Young Rider Freestyle Championship on July 22 in Lexington, Ky.
SOCCER
The U.S. U-20 men's team suffered a loss to Denmark, 0-1, during the opening match of the 2012 Milk Cup on July 21 in Limavady, Northern Ireland.
TENNIS
Andy Roddick (Austin, Texas) won the Atlanta Open with a 1-6, 7-6 (2), 6-2 win over Luxembourg's Gilles Muller to take an early series lead. The win marked Roddick's fifth career U.S. Open Series tournament title.
TRACK & FIELD
Team USA scored its third straight Thorpe Cup heptathlon title with three top- four finishes from Bettie Wade (Farmington Hills, Mich.), Chelsea Carrier-Eades (Buckhannon, W.Va.) and Barbara Nwaba (Los Angeles, Calif.) on July 21 in Marburg, Germany.
TRIATHLON
In her final tune-up prior to the London Olympic Games, Sarah Groff (Hanover, N.H.) picked up a third-place finish at World Triathlon Hamburg on July 22 in Germany. The event marked Groff's second career World Triathlon Series podium finish. Jarrod Shoemaker (Clermont, Fla.) led the U.S. men with a 27th-place finish.
VOLLEYBALL
Olympic duo Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.) took third place at the Grand Slam in Klagenfurt, Austria on July 22 to earn their fourth-straight podium appearance on the 2012 FIVB SWATCH World Tour.
WATER POLO
The New York Athletic Club women and the Newport Water Polo Foundation men captured gold medals at the U.S. Open of Water Polo on July 22 in Irvine, Calif.
