Seventh-seeded Latvian Ernests Gulbis outlasted Austrian wild card Andreas Haider-Maurer to advance at the Kitzbuhel Cup.

Gulbis, who was the lone seeded player to perform on Tuesday, battled back from a first-set loss to take a 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 decision over Haider-Maurer in just over two hours.

A pair of qualifiers also needed three sets to dispatch their foes as Austria's Phillip Oswald downed Daniel Brands of Germany 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 and Slovakia's Pavol Cervenak battled past Spain's Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo 4-6, 7-6 (7-1), 6-3.

In other first-round action, Italian Simone Bolelli edged Argentina's Horacio Zeballos 7-5, 7-5 and Brazil's Rogerio Dutra Silva advanced when Czech Jan Hajek retired in the first set while trailing 4-1 because of dizziness.
