London, England – Top Brazilian goalkeeper Rafael Cabral has withdrawn from the Summer Olympics due to an elbow injury, forcing backup Neto into the starting role.
The Santos goalkeeper reportedly suffered the injury in practice on Monday and will miss the entirety of the London Games. Neto, who plays for the Italian club team Fiorentina, will now get the start when Brazil opens its Olympic tournament schedule against Egypt this Thursday at Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales.
Gabriel, a 20-year-old goalie for AC Milan, was already with the Brazilian squad in the United Kingdom as a stand-by and will now serve as the backup to Neto.
Renan Ribeiro will arrive in London on Wednesday to replace Gabriel as Brazil's stand-by goalkeeper.
