Torreon, Mexico – Herculez Gomez scored in the 72nd minute as Santos downed San Luis, 2-1, on Saturday on the opening weekend of the Mexican Apertura season.
Emilio Lopez scored in the opening minute for San Luis at Estadio Corona, but Carlos Quintero tied the match less than 3 minutes later with a finish to the bottom-left corner.
Gomez delivered the match-winner midway through the second half as he received a pass from Juan Pablo Rodriguez and slotted to the lower-right corner.
Tigres began the season with a 4-0 win at Jaguares to get the top spot on goal differential, while Fernando Arce and Pablo Aguilar scored as Tijuana defeated Puebla, 2-0, on the first day of the season Friday.
Also Saturday, Leon returned to the top flight following a 10-year absence and Hernan Burbano and Edwin Hernandez scored in 2-0 win over Queretaro that both clubs ended with 10 men, an own goal gave Atlas a 1-1 draw and UNAM, Monterrey tied America, 0-0, and Morelia tied Cruz Azul, 0-0.
On Sunday, Carlos Esquivel and Juan Cacho scored as Toluca downed Guadalajara, 2-1, and Atlante tied Pachuca, 0-0.
