Omaha, NE – Scott Weltz shocked favorites Brendan Hansen and Eric Shanteau to win the 200-meter breaststroke at the U.S. Olympic trials on Friday.
The 25-year-old Weltz clocked in at 2:09.01, while Clark Burckle took second in 2:09.97. Shanteau and Hansen finished third and fourth, respectively, as each will have to settle for competing in just the 100-meter breaststroke in London.
There were no surprises in the 100-meter freestyle as heavy favorite Nathan Adrian prevailed in convincing fashion. The 23-year-old Washington native led at the turn and touched in at 48.10 seconds, 0.36 seconds ahead of Cullen Jones, who finished in 48.46.
Jones, the first African-American to win an Olympic swimming gold medal, edged Matt Grevers by 0.09 seconds to claim the second Olympic berth.
In Friday's other final, Cammile Adams pulled away to win the women's 200- meter butterfly in 2:06.52. Kathleen Hersey claimed the second Olympic spot in 2:07.72.
The head-to-head rivalry between Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte continued Friday in the semifinals of the 200-meter individual medley. Once again, it was Lochte who prevailed, touching in at 1:55.51, a full body length ahead of Phelps' time of 1:56.66.
Less than an hour earlier, Lochte coasted as the top qualifier in the semifinals of the 200-meter backstroke with a time of 1:55.73.
