The Pittsburgh Pirates claimed infielder/outfielder Oscar Tejeda off waivers from the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday.

He was placed on the Pirates' 40-man roster and assigned to Double-A Altoona.

In 51 games with the Red Sox Double-A affiliate in Portland, Tejeda hit .262 with 15 doubles, five home runs and 31 RBI.

He spent the entire 2011 campaign in Portland, where he led the club with 457 at-bats and was second in hits (114) and stolen bases (13).

Tejeda was originally signed by Boston as an undrafted free agent in 2006.

The Pirates also designated left-hander Doug Slaten for assignment.
