The Milwaukee Brewers signed veteran pitcher Livan Hernandez to a one-year contract on Friday and designated pitcher Juan Perez for assignment.

The 37-year-old right-hander pitched in 18 games out of the bullpen for Atlanta this season and went 1-1 with a 4.94 earned run average before being designated for assignment by the Braves on June 15.

Since coming into the league with Florida in 1996, he has gone 175-177 over 493 games, 474 of which were starts. Milwaukee will be the ninth different franchise Hernandez has played for over his 17-year career.

Perez appeared in 10 games for Milwaukee this season and posted an 0-1 record with a 5.14 ERA.

The Brewers also activated shortstop Cesar Izturis from the 15-day disabled list Friday and designated infielder Edwin Maysonet for assignment from the 25-man roster.

Izturis has been sidelined since May 26 with a strained left hamstring and was batting just .216 with one home run and five RBI over 31 games.

Maysonet, 30, played in 30 games for the Brewers this season and batted .250 with one home run and four RBI.
