Michael Phelps Reportedly To Swim 7 Events At 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials

Michael Phelps will swim in seven individual events at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Swimming, which begin Monday in Omaha, Neb., according to Yahoo! Sports' Pat Forde.

Phelps, 27, plans to swim the 200-meter and 400m individual medleys, 100m and 200m butterfly, 100m and 200m frees and 200 back, per Forde. If he were to qualify for all seven events, he would have the chance to win 10 medals in London, with the three relay events included -- 4x100m free, 4x200m free and 4x100m medley.

Forde calls it an "ambitious program at age 27," and indeed it is, but he's quick to point out that "scratches from some events would not be surprising." If Phelps were to swim all seven events, it would mean multiple finals on just one day: The 200m back and 200m IM finals are both on June 30.

The news of Phelps' planned events means we can now map out when he and Ryan Lochte should duel in finals: the 200m and 400m IM, 200m back and 200m free. Phelps took gold at the 2011 World Championships in 100m and 200m fly, but was second to Lochte in both the 200m free and 200m IM.

Phelps has won 16 Olympic medals, including 14 gold, and with three more medals, of any color, will become the most decorated athlete in the history of the the Olympics.

The 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Swimming, which will be held at the CenturyLink Center, run from June 25-July 1. A complete schedule and be found at the USA Swimming site.
